Limbs Caused by Poor Pruning or Lopping
When a tree has been lopped the resulting damage can never be
repaired. Unlike humans, trees don't heal. They just calouse
over the damaged parts. The infiltration of pathogens (wood
rot fungi) spread down through the branch.

and the resulting new growth. You can see how weakly attached
this new growth is. |

2 shows the result of decay in the exposed heartwood.
Now the new branch has grown even larger and is attached
to the old hollow branch. |
Compare
the growth pattern in the picture below with that of the new
branch caused by lopping in the previous pictures. You can
see how there is a intergrated structure formed by the branch
collar (brown) and the trunk collar (yellow).
